DEQ Project Managers Tim Spencer and Bob Schwarz attended the July Madison South Neighborhood Association Meeting, and provided an update on the agency's recent investigation into methane levels at the former H.G. Lavelle Landfill site at 82nd Avenue and Siskiyou Street. They began by providing some brief background of the site. From 1972 to 1982, Rose City Sand and Gravel operated a demoliton landfill at the location. The landfill has been closed for over 25 years, and post-closure landfill gas monitoring continues under a Solid Waste Disposal Site Closure permit issued by the DEQ. In cooperation with Mike Hashem, the current owner of the Lavelle site since 1998, the DEQ is further evaluating the methane gas levels in the soil at the landfill's property line, as well as in enclosed spaces in structures adjacent to the sites's southern boundary.
